The debut album from this band from Finland.
The band was a quartet with a lineup of drums, bass, guitars, keyboards and vocals.
I am reviewing all their albums in the coming couple of months.
This album opened the Scandinavian death metal scene and is a scene/genre-setter. A lot of bands copied the attitude and sound from this album and this genre is one of the strongest, best metal genres in the world. From what I gather, Amon Amarth is currently the biggest band in this genre.
The Karelian Isthmus clocks in at three quarters of an hour.
The music is extreme metal.
There is a lot of folk music in their extreme metal. There is even some subtle progressive rock here.
The music is very heavy throughout. There are some melodies here too. The music is also epic and very complex.
The vocals are death-grunts/growls.
This album has aged remarkably well. The quality is good throughout. This is one of the classic extreme metal albums.
