Fates Warning - The Spectre Within (1985)

The second album from this band from USA.

The band was a quintet on this album with a lineup of drums, bass, guitars and vocals.

One guest added keyboards to this album.

Their 1984 debut album Night On Brocken was an Iron Maiden copycat album and did not really indicate where this band was heading. See my review from earlier this month.

The fifty minutes long The Spectre Within moved away from the Iron Maiden type of heavy metal. The break was not complete, though. Nevertheless, the band moved much more in the direction of power metal, German power metal, and progressive metal on this album.

Progressive metal was still in it's infancy back then. The Spectre Within is indeed one of the first albums in this genre. The music is still not fully progressive metal.

The light, screaming male vocals and guitars are pretty good. The music is pretty powerful and heavy. There are some progressive metal here although most of the music is more power metal than progressive metal. There are still some Iron Maiden heavy metal here too.

The music sounds a bit dated but is still decent enough. The vocals are an acquired taste. I am not really won over by this album.
