The eighth album from this band from USA.
The band was a trio with a lineup of drums, bass, guitars and saxophone.
This is the follow up album to the 2019 album Strong Thing.
Russian Dolls is clocking in at thirty-five minutes.
When I was a kid, I was given a russian doll by a relative for my birthday. It is actually quite a funny, impressive toy... well, piece of kit. Something Marbin too has noted as this is an instrumental concept album about russian dolls and how to open it up, revealing a new doll which reveals a new doll... and so it goes on. Marbin describes it as a picture of life as we are shedding the layers as we go on in life. I must say I agree with Marbin here. They have a very good point.
The music here is jazz. Trio-format jazz and pretty much bare-boned jazz.
The main instrument is the saxophone. It has been claimed that this is mainly the saxophonist Danny Markovitch solo album. He also came up with the concept which the band developed into this album.
The other two band members does a good job on their instruments although more in a supporting and rhythm capacity.
The music is pretty melodic. It is also pretty uncomplicated and groovy.
The quality is good throughout this album and this is another good album from Marbin.
