Steely Dan - Countdown to Ecstasy (1973)

The second album from this band from USA.

The band was a quintet with a lineup of drums, percussion, bass, guitars, pedal steel guitars, piano, electric piano, synths, harmonica and vocals.

A number of guests added bass, guitars, slide guitar, woodwinds and backing vocals.

This is the follow up to their very successful 1972 debut album Can't Buy A Thrill.

The music on this, the forty minutes long follow up album is quirky, jazzy 1970s rock. There is also some funk here.

The band was and still is regarded as a band who brought a lot of intelligent sophistication and class to the rock genre. That comes through on this album. The music is indeed sophisticated and elegant. Add quirkiness and funky too.

In this respect, Steely Dan is in their own class. Something I have noted from their first two albums.

The music here is well-crafted and with some details and quirks you will not find in any other mainstream bands in the 1970s.

The vocals is also good and the eight songs are all good. Yes, I understand why this band is so revered. Quality and class is timeless.
